| SweeneyVideoFri, 09 Jan 2009 04:45:05 -0800 by SwoontasticSweeneyOn November 30, my very first fish, a red butterfly Roundtail Betta named Sweeney, passed on to the next life. He was a fiery spirit, always on the go and always strutting like a peacock. No other Betta I've had would create the bubblenests like he would, at the slightest excuse like he would. No other Betta would burst into a flaring frenzy when I got too close to his tank. Since he was my first fish, he had sentimental value to me, but his temperament and nature was what made him my favorite. He was the one who always seemed to get into scrapes (I referred it to constantly trying to commit suicide), the worst being that night I was doing a water change and I had taken the wider end off the tube (the first time I was trying it). Sweeney, being the curious dude he was, went right up to the end and, naturally, got sucked right into the tube. Fortunately, or unfortunately, his body was too big, so his body slammed to a stop with his head stuck in there. I couldn't get him to fall out, so I had to blow hard into the tube to get him to plop out. He spent a few minutes floating in shock in a corner behind his heater, but aside from a nasty bruise and scraped scales, he was perfectly fine and healed well.He's always been a vigorious eater, and that's what got him in the end. He could stuff multiple brine shrimp into his mouth and swallow without a problem, but on his last night, something went awry and he couldn't dislodge the brine shrimp he had stuck in his throat. I held him in my hand up close to the surface because he didn't have the strength (he dropped like a rock to the gravel, and when he was held right up to the surface, he'd suck desperately at the air but the shrimp was affecting his ability to hold the bubble of air properly). I ended up putting him in a cup with an inch or so of water in it and putting that in his tank (to keep it warm), but he was gone in the morning. Never thought his death would gut me like it did.In the spot in the middle of the first quarter, when he's laying in a corner at the bottom of the tank, that was early in the first couple of weeks with me. He developed a case of Ich and wasn't feeling at all well. Fortunately he got better and healed well, and his personality began to come out and I got to know him.
