| Baghdad is Castle the history part 2 ????? ???? ??????? ?????Tue, 02 Dec 2008 22:14:20 -0800 by IraqinewsagencyIhab Salim-Independent journalist-Sandviken -Sweden-video Production-INA-3/12/ 2008:Baghdad is the capital of Iraq and of Baghdad Governorate, with which it is also coterminous. With a municipal population estimated at 6.5 million, it is the largest city in Iraq, and the third largest city in the Middle East after Cairo and Tehran.Located on the River Tigris, the city dates back to the 8th century. Once the centre of Dar al-salam, the Muslim world, Baghdad is now important because of the ongoing Iraq War.Name:Although there is no dispute over its Iranian origin, there have been several rival proposals as to its specific etymology. The most reliable and most widely accepted among these is that the name is a Middle Persian compound of Bag "god" + d?d "given", translating to "God-given" or "God's gift", whence Modern Persian Ba?d?d. Another leading proposal is that the name comes from Middle Persian B?gh-d?d "The Given Garden". The name is pre-Islamic and the origins are unclear, but it is related to previous settlements, which did not have any political or commercial power, making it a virtually new foundation in the time of the Abbasids. Mansur called the city Madinat as-Salam, or City of Peace, as a reference to paradise. This was the official name on coins, weights, and other things.History:On 30 July 762 the caliph Abu Ja'far Al-Mansur founded the city. Mansur believed that Baghdad was the perfect city to be the capital of the Islamic empire under the Abbasids. Mansur loved the site so much he is quoted saying, This is indeed the city that I am to found, where I am to live, and where my descendants will reign afterward". The city's growth was helped by its location, which gave it control over strategic and trading routes (along the Tigris to the sea and east-west from the Middle East to the rest of Asia. Monthly trade fairs were also held in this area. Another reason why Baghdad provided an excellent location was due to the abundance of water and its dry climate. Water exists on both north and south ends of the city gates, allowing all households to have a plentiful supply, which was very uncommon during this time. Baghdad reached its greatest prosperity during the reign of the caliph Harun al-Rashid in the early 9th century.Baghdad eclipsed Ctesiphon, the capital of the Persian Empire, which was located some 30 km (20 miles) to the southeast, which had been under Muslim control since 637, and which became quickly deserted after the foundation of Baghdad. The site of Babylon, which had been deserted since the 2nd century BC, lies some 90 km (55 miles) to the south. The making of Baghdad:In its early years the city was known as a deliberate reminder of an expression in the Qu'ran, when it refers to Paradise. Four years before Baghdad's foundation, in 758, Mansur assembled engineers, surveyors, and art constructionists from around the world to come together and draw up plans for the city. Over 100,000 construction workers come to survey the plans; many were distributed salaries to start the building of the grand city. The framework of the city itself is two large semicircles about twelve miles (19 km) in diameter. July was chosen as the starting time because two astronomers, Naubaknt and Mashallah, believed that the city should be built under the sign of the lion, Leo. Leo is significant because he is the element of fire and symbolises productivity, proudness, and expansion. The bricks used to make the city were 18 on all four sides. Abu Hanifa was the counter of the bricks and he developed a canal, which brought water to the work site for the use of both human consumption and the manufacturing of the bricks. Also, throughout the city marble was used to make the buildings and marble steps led down to the rivers edge. Within the city there were many parks, gardens, villas, and beautiful promenades which gave the city an elegant and classy finish. The city was designed as a circle about 2 km in diameter, leading it to be known as the "Round City". The original design shows a ring of residential and commercial structures along the inside of the city walls, but the final construction added another ring, inside the first. In the centre of the city lay the mosque, as well as headquarters for guards. The purpose or use of the remaining space in the center is unknown. The circular design of the city was a direct reflection of the traditional Persian Sasanian urban design. The ancient Sasanian city of Gur is nearly identical in its general circular design, radiating avenues, and the government buildings and temples at the centre of the city. | Big 3 ScamTue, 02 Dec 2008 21:54:33 -0800 by BassfoolerFord's $2m-a-year chief executive, Alan Mulally, yesterday vowed to work for an annual salary of one dollar if the struggling carmaker has to take government money as part of a $25bn (£16.7bn) bail-out of the US car industry. In a further move to woo congressional support, Mulally pledged to sell Ford's fleet of corporate jets, cancel all next year's bonuses, close more plants, trim its dealer network and step up work on developing electric vehicles. In its business plan, submitted to Congress yesterday, Ford said it was seeking bridging finance of $9bn, but argued that if Congress gave its approval it would not have to draw down the money. "For Ford, government loans would serve as a critical backstop or safeguard against worsening conditions, as we drive transformational change in our company," Mulally said.America's big three auto firms - Ford, General Motors and Chrysler - were all due to submit business plans to Congress as they seek financial support to weather the economic downturn. The carmakers' pleas for aid were underlined by the latest grim sales figures yesterday. Ford reported a near 31% drop in sales for November, and said it expected the industry-wide slump to be about 35%. "The economy continues to weaken and auto sales reflect this reality," Ford sales and marketing chief Jim Farley said.GM's recovery plan is expected to include cuts to its network of eight brands, centring on the sale or shutdown of the Saab, Saturn, or Pontiac marques. Its notoriously gas-guzzling Hummer is already up for sale. GM asked the government to extend $12bn in loans and another $6bn in credit. The car company said it needs Congress to extend $4bn in financing this month and provide the rest of the $12bn by March. The remaining $6bn would be available if a year-long recession in US auto sales drops beyond GM's now-lowered expectations. Without the immediate $4bn cash infusion, the top US automaker faces the risk of failure, a senior executive said. "The first $4bn is crucial," GM chief operating officer Fritz Henderson said. "There is no Plan B."The road to restoration for privately-owned Chrysler could focus on an eventual merger with a foreign vehicle maker, given that its talks on uniting with larger rival General Motors have stalled. Some congressional leaders have made it clear they are determined to ensure the carmakers will only get their support if they come up with credible restructuring plans. Hearings on the promises made by Detroit's motor groups will begin on Thursday.Despite the carmakers' deferential return, tensions remain high as their defenders in Congress chafe at Wall Street's easy claim to a multibillion-dollar bail-out while Detroit struggles for its loans. The $25bn auto rescue could win approval next week.Ford said yesterday it expected the company overall and the north American operations to be either profitable or breaking even in 2011. The forecast is based on optimistic prospects for a US market recovery which would see sales of 12.5m units next year, with a rise to 14.5m in 2010 and 15.5m in 2011.Ford has sold Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover in the past two years and yesterday said it was looking at the future of Volvo. In Germany Volkswagen reported that sales had fallen 17.6% in November compared with a year ago, while tomorrow the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders will disclose the performance of the UK new car market in November.Printable version Send to a friend Share Clip Contact us larger | smaller EmailClose Recipient's email address Your name Add a note (optional) Your IP address will be loggedShareClose Digg reddit Google Bookmarks Yahoo! | Secret Weapon?!Tue, 02 Dec 2008 21:41:25 -0800 by CerberuswaltzWARNING! THIS VIDEO CONTAINS A NAIL CLIPPING THINGY. DON'T WATCH IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE!!! WARNED!!!Just a quick video. I was growing this for some time now, since Halloween, I think. All of my nails, anyway, though after Halloween I cut them all except this one (I forgot to, lolz). And so, it grew. I painted it black to cover it up sometimes, but it rarely works. During the month of November I was asked: A. Do you play guitar? or B. Do you do cocaine?I said no, and hell no. Just to draw, which it did help me a bit.Although this isn't the LONGEST nail, either, it's fairly long for a guy, and myself. It's longer in person! So, I cut it. Might be a bit... gross.Still, I was proud of it! Now my thumb looks all tiny D8Enjoy, possibly- De Vil Related: long nail de vil halloween weapon sharp finger | |

He learned to draw and paint by himself. He began to paint seriously around the year 2502 after ascending to the throne. The paintings were done during his spare time from royal duties and they are mostly of Her Majesty the Queen and the royal children. During the bicentennial celebration the Fine Arts department was given royal permission to hold an exhibition of His Majestys paintings at the National Museum. Although His Majesty was occupied with royal duties and devoted most of his time to solving the problems that his subjects were facing, he was still able to provide forty-seven paintings for exhibition.
