Now, they're not so sure. Between 8:30 and 9 p.m., the Hurley family in Whippany captured images of a bizarre object in the sky and contacted WCBSTV.com."It was unsettling for sure," said Cindy Hurley. "It was something you've never seen before, and a very strange pattern." Eleven-year-old Kristin was the first to spot them, a group of three lights together, and two lights together, seen in the horizon through the trees. "I looked up outside. I was really scared and saw five red lights," she said. The family all went out onto their deck to look at the strange sight. Paul Hurley, a pilot who works at Morristown Airport, said they weren't planes. "I've been in aviation for 20 years and never seen anything like it," he told CBS 2. Paul was one of several people who e-mailed WCBSTV.com after witnessing the lights. "Red lights in the sky over the Morristown-Morris Township area, 5 red lights in a weird pattern over the area," one viewer wrote. "The formation of 5 lights were first noticed over Cedar Knolls and then as they approached the Madison/Morris Township border the rear half of the formation slowly faded and appeared to drop from the sky and then the front part of the formation went out one by one," wrote another. At 8:28, the Hanover Township police received the first of seven 911 calls. "It looks like flares attached to balloons," said a caller.Paul Hurley, who called the Morristown Airport control tower, says the lights had also been spotted from there, and they caused no interference with flight operations. Between those officials and the Morristown Police, the best guess as to what the lights were: nothing more than a prank, roadside flares attached to helium balloons. Yet, they left rather quickly. "It like, it took off, very strange," said Paul. There's been no report of any recovered, and police don't know who released them.The Federal Aviation Administration tells CBS 2 news, with the exception of laser lights and weather balloons, there is no regulation on releasing balloons or lights into the sky. A civil society being the aggregate of those institutions of free association acting independently of the government. The co-optation by government of independent associations generally leads to the growth of extremist religious organizations as the principle channel for expressing political dissent. If we recognize that an authoritarian state contradicts the requirements of man to live as man, how does that condition develop? There is recent historical precedent of liberal democracies transforming into authoritarian regimes, who strangled civil society with governmental controls. I refer here to European fascism.As Alfredo Rocco explained at that time, fascism stresses the necessityof sacrificeeven up to the total immolation of the individual, in behalf of societysociety is the end, individuals the means, and its whole life consists in using individuals as instruments for its social ends. [1]There were echoes of these words from 1925 from both sides of the recent American election.The Bush Administration is best described as an Orgy of Sacrifice, as the President wantonly solicited the destruction of greater values to achieve lesser values for the benefit of the collective good. Predictably, this led to a private collapse.Now, we are promised more public help to the private sector, with more public control. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has petitioned the federal government to regulate the bumpers on light trucks (SUVs, pickups, and vans) just as it regulates those on cars. The same bumper rules should apply to all kinds of passenger vehicles.To meet federal rules, car bumpers must be 16 to 20 inches off the ground and limit the amount of damage that can be sustained in a low-speed crash. The idea is to ensure that the bumpers on colliding cars engage, absorbing most of the energy of the impact and keeping damage away from expensive-to-repair parts - like fenders, grilles, headlights, and taillights.Car bumper rules don't apply to light trucks. In fact, it's still legal to sell these vehicles without any bumpers at all. Federal regulators' longstanding thinking is that requiring light trucks to have bumpers would compromise off-road navigation and make it hard to use these vehicles at loading ramps. The Institute counters that putting damage-resistant bumpers on light trucks needn't compromise utility.New SUV-to-car crash test results: A series of low-speed crash tests shows why. The Institute details the results in its petition to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The tests involved 4 midsize SUVs striking the back of a typical midsize car at 10 miles per hour. One of the SUVs - a Ford Explorer - does a better job than 3 others (Hummer H3, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Mitsubishi Endeavor) of resisting damage in low-speed crashes and minimizing damage to the vehicles with which it collides.The front bumpers on the H3, Grand Cherokee, and Endeavor are so high that they overrode the rear bumpers of the stationary Hyundai Sonatas in the Institute tests. Damage to the Sonatas ranged from $3,891 to $4,737. Even the SUVs sustained more than $1,000 damage each. In contrast, the Explorer sustained less than $1,000 damage in the same front-into-rear test, and it inflicted only about one-third as much damage on the Sonata as the worst performer among the 4 SUVs, the H3.
